From a Boy to A Man
Another day in the hood there was a boy, 12, who went by the name of Bishop. His father was a born again Christian and Bishop of the neighborhood church in Bayview, Hunters Point. His father use to hang on the same street corners his son does. Even though he was saved by the name of the Lord some people may forgive things that he has done in the past but will never forget. Then again there are people who never forgive. The past crept up behind him when one of his old gang rivals shot him one day when he was stepping outside of his church. Now the only thing left of him on this earth is his son, Jeremiah Jackson. In memory of his father folks in the neighborhood call him Bishop. Now Jeremiah had to step up and play the mans roll of his household. His mother was unemployed and without his father they were poor. They were evicted from their house on 3rd street and Palou. For the time being they lived with their cousin on 3rd street and Newcomb. Bishop didn’t know how he could keep food on the table for his mother and him so he started hanging outside and was exposed to selling drugs. Older kids in the neighborhood gave him product to sell on the street corner right outside of his house on Newcomb. His mother didn’t approve of what he was doing but couldn’t refuse taking the money he gave to her because it was all they had. Drug dealing had become Bishops occupation now, a couple years went by and everything was smooth. His mother and him had started giving their cousins rent money so they could stay there permanently, and food was on the table every night. Jeremiah was 16 now and and thought he could trust his friends on the block. He thought they would ride or die for him. Until one day one his so called partners got arrested for being involved in a drug deal. The police told Jeremiah’s friend if he gave up the name of the main drug dealer they would let him go, he snitched and told the police that Jeremiah Jackson was behind the whole transaction. Bishop was incarcerated and locked down until he was 18 years old. He went in as a boy but came out as a man.
